Educational response

This assessment task involves the development of a creative and constructive educational response to the issue examined in your first assignment.

The main idea behind this assignment is to enable you to develop an educational response or resource that will be relevant to young people and useful beyond the course, in your role as an educator in a school classroom or elsewhere. The resource can be designed for use with or by school students, teachers, parents and/or other relevant stakeholders. Its primary goal should be to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding of the relevant issue, theme or topic.

In the process of preparing your educational response, consideration should be given to the diverse needs, backgrounds, interests and aspirations of the students, and careful thought should be given to developing a response that connects with their lived experiences and prepares them to take greater control of their own learning and development.

This assignment comprises two parts:

  1. Part 1: Précis (400 words approx.), and
  2. Part 2: Product (1,250 word equivalence)

Please note that the ‘word equivalence’ given for Part 2 is a rough guide that refers to the amount of work that would be required to produce a paper of around 1,250 words.

The two parts are outlined below in reverse order, as Part 1 should be written after Part 2 has been completed.

Part 2: Product

The second part of your educational response, the product, can incorporate a broad range of resources and materials and could take one of the following forms:

  •  a program or module design or lesson plan (e.g. to improve students’ understanding of post-school transitions to the labour market and/or further education via a work-related research project or work experience program)
  •  a curriculum innovation (e.g. a submission to a school-based curriculum or subject committee that presents a case to introduce a new subject to re-engage disaffected students)
  •  a teaching and learning resource for teachers and/or students (e.g. a webpage with links to resources that reflect the real-life connections and relevance of one of your own subject content areas; a short Youtube video to enhance student awareness of young workers’ rights and responsibilities)
  •  a resources guide for teachers (e.g. for teachers wishing to include some work-oriented learning or career-related education in their classes)

Use your imagination and creativity and produce something to stimulate and/or support learning.

The product you develop should include items like those listed below. However, each student’s educational response will be distinctive and different from others. So the list below should be seen as a flexible framework for adaptation to best fit your particular product and material:

  • topic
  • learning objectives/outcomes
  • intended target group(s) and/or user(s)
  • content/subject matter (e.g. key concepts, areas of knowledge, skills, etc)
  • teaching/learning methods (e.g. discussion, group work, role play, student research etc.)
  • learning resources and other support materials
  • assessment process (informal and/or formal; formative, summative)

If theabove items are not relevant or applicable to your particular educational response, you will need to exercise your own judgment with respect to the design, organisation and presentationmaterial. In all cases, put yourself in the shoes of the intended users and view it from their perspective(s) in order to maximise clarity, relevance and useability.

Part 1: Précis

The purpose of the précisis to provide a concise overview and explanation of your educational response. It is more than a simple summary of your educational response, as it also needs to succinctly frame and justify your response to the issue you addressed in the first assignment. The purpose of the précis is to introduce your response in a way that gives readers and intended user(s) a clear understanding of what you have developed, why, for whom, what it comprises, and how it is to be used and evaluated.

Your précis should include a brief outline of the following elements, which may also be adapted to best reflect the specific form and character of your educational response:

  •  Purpose/aims/outcomes of your educational response
  •  Background and rationale for your educational response (i.e. why it has been developed and for whom, with reference to its relationship to the issue addressed in your first assignment)
  •  Main features of your educational response (e.g. structure, content and teaching/learning approaches)
  •  Logic and principles that underlie your educational response (e.g. in relation to curriculum and pedagogy)
  •  Evaluation framework, comprising criteria for evaluating the outcomes and effectiveness of your educational response
  •  Reference list (not included in the précis word count)

Where necessary and appropriate, your précis should refer to your first assignment (policy and research review) and the texts you cited therein. For instance, you can draw explicitly on your first paper to provide arguments and evidence that inform and justify your educational response.

The two parts of your educational response, the précis and the product, will necessarily correspond with and reflect each other to a significant degree. However, when you are preparing your précis, do not simply cut and paste whole sections of text from your product into the précis. Paraphrasing is preferable to verbatim repetition.
