Source as Lens
Description: 400-500 words, plus an MLA-formatted Works Cited page Source: Murray, “The Maker’s Eye” Due Date: 12/6 Friday 11:59pm Canvas
“Using a reading as a lens means literally looking at things as the reading does, trying to think in its
terms” (Rosenwasser and Stephen 63). Assignment Apply Murray’s article, “The Maker’s Eye” to your own experience of writing this semester. Consider what aspects of Murray’s argument seem to fit your own experience and what aspects do not fit your experience. Focus on the claims in Murray’s article that do not seem to fit your experience and write about one or two discrepancies. Try to answer the question of how your experience this semester has challenged you to think in new ways about writing.
Strategies
Read pg. 63-67, “Apply a Reading as a Lens,” in Writing Analytically. Then attempt the following: • Determine what ideas/concepts from the lens text (The Maker’s Eye) match your experience of
writing and which do not. • Apply those concepts that match well; consider ways that the lens text helps you to consider
your experience of writing differently. Paragraph 1 Briefly explain the context and introduce the topic. Introduce the lens, and state your thesis. The thesis should be a claim about how the lens helps you understand your writing experience in a new way. Paragraph 2 Apply the lens to specific details to show how you arrived at your interpretation of your writing experience; what ideas/concepts from the lens text match your writing experience and which do not. Restate your thesis as a conclusion.
